Gly. 1976-78; Paris; O, from 1983; New York, M, from 1984; London, CG, from 1985. Also Milan, S; Salzburg; Florence; etc. Vocally gifted, and magnetic on stage. His unusually broad repertory includes Figaro (Mozart), Don Giovanni, Leporello, Mustafà, Moïse, Gounod's and Boito's Mephistopheles, Don Quichotte, Attila, Assur (Rossini's 'Semiramide'), Philip, Pimen, Boris, Nick Shadow, Duke Bluebeard. One of the most prolific recording artists of his generation.
