| Descended from a Polish immigrant family, his real name was Thomas Max Pointkowski. He studied at Michigan State College with Herbert Swanson, then at the University of Michigan with Chase Baromeo. Before the completion of his education, he worked as a postman and as a taxi driver. Stage debut in 1952 at the New York City Center Opera as Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief by Menotti. He stayed in that house for two seasons and left for Europe in 1956, studying with Hedwig Fichtmüller in Germany. He sang from 1957-58 under a beginner's contract at the National Theater of Mannheim, then from 1958-59 as soloist at the Hagen City Theater (Westfalen) and again from 1959-64 at the Mannheim National Theater. Here he took part in the premiere of Das lange Weihnachtsmahl (The Long Christmas Dinner) by Paul Hindemith (17 December 1961.) From 1964-66, he worked at the Stuttgart State Opera and later was a member of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich. He was a regular guest artist at the Vienna State Opera and the German Opera House in Berlin, as well as the Hamburg State Opera (1964). He sang the role of Nardo in Mozart's La finta giardiniera at the Salzburg Festival (1965-66), and Wolfram in Tannhäuser and the Herald in Lohengrin at the 1967 Bayreuth Festival. As a guest, he appeared at Covent Garden (1972-74) as Rigoletto; at the San Francisco Opera (1962, 1968), the Rome Opera (1968) and at the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels (1970.) Last but not least, he was a much sought-after concert and oratorio singer. On stage, he was admired above all in the Italian repertoire, including the title roles in Nabucco and Macbeth.
