This Singer was born in Bavaria, Germany in1946. He is the son of the Ornithology Communication Scientist and Conductor-Composer, University Professor (Prague) Dr. Waldemar Cerny; his mother Gabriela-Gisela, Luise Countes Szekely was a Soprano and Concert Pianist. In 1967 he followed his parents to Australia where they held Theater contracts and there he enroled later for studies in law. In addition to this, 1971 he decided to become an actor and started a course an Arts School in Sydney. Very soon, although, he felt drawn to the tradition of his family (who, since 1759 were Lawyers, stage artist or both) and enroled, after winning some singing contests (entirely without voice training yet), at the Univ. of Sydney Cons. Opera School on a Gov. Scholarship, which included voice training (with Marjorie Walker as first Pedagogue in Sydney, and later with Prof. Valerie Collins-Varga) and acting. The private acting tuition he kept on parallel. At the same time he took up lessons in Piano again. Soon he began to give concert presentation with various Songs, Chansons and Lieder. The Sheldonian Theatre at the Univ. of Oxford called upon him to perform the Role of the Stadtkommandant (City Commander) in 'Der Friedenstag' (day of peace) from Richard Strauss, the first re-releese with BBC Radio Broadcast after the first Performance sung by Hans Hotter in London. For the Dutchman he was called to the Wiesbaden State Opera by Director Peter Beilharz, likewise to the State Opera of Bremen through General Music Director Pinchas Steinberg; the Director of this Operahouse, Tobias Richter, contracted him for his production of 'Palestrina' for the role of Count Luna, which was hailed europe wide, particularly in Montpellier and Limoges. To Sydney he returned some 20 years later in 1996 after his virgin moves on stage there, for one of the highlights in his career, when he was invited to sing Pizarro, with the: "doubtless most spectacular applaus this theater has ever yet experienced"! With the Berlin Symphony Orchestra he was choosen to sing a most rare and very challenging role: Kain, from 'Die ersten Menschen' (the first men) from Rudi Stephan at the celebated Schinkelkonzerthaus at the Berlin Gendarmenmarkt conducted by Karl-Anton Rieckenbacher, which was followed by Radiobroadcast and CD Recording, with Siegmund Niemsgern, who: "not merely replaced Hans Sotin, the original cast, but proved to be absolutely peer to him". Cerny followed the invitation to the Richard Strauss - Festival -Days in Upper Bavaria at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, under the Patronage of Brigitte Fassbänder, to sing the Baritone part in Strauss' 'Der Bürger als Edelmann' (citizen as a nobleman), with Sir Peter Ustinov as Speaker, Radiobroadcast and CD Recording followed, the baton was held by Karl-Anton Rieckenbacher.
