Groop Monica
mezzosoprano

1994 was the year of Groop´s great breakthrough. Her debut recitals at New York´s Carnegie Hall and London´s Wigmore Hall received glowing reviews; the New York Times wrote: " A new mezzo has joined the star parade." Her success continued in 1995 in, among other things, the controversial Los Angeles production of Pelléas et Mélisande, which was directed by the enfant terrible of opera, Peter Sellars. Groop´s Mélisande and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen, received great praise. In 1996, Groop participated in performances and a recording of Mozart's Don Giovanni under Sir Georg Solti. Her most recent recordings include Vivaldi's Ottone in Villa and the complete songs of Pettersson. Groop is a miracle of versatility who has been familiar to lovers of Baroque music for many years. Groop continues to perform regularly in oratorio and other Baroque music, with specialists including Sigiswald Kuijken and Philippe Herreweghe. Groop wishes to continue to develop her art in as versatile a way as possible. "Oratorio performances have given my voice a secure foundation. Lieder and the spirit of solidarity of chamber music, too, are important to me." In solo recitals, she collaborates with András Schiff and Aleksey Lybimov, among others. Keeping her feet firmly on the ground, Groop confesses herself to be a scion of the Germanic tradition. "The bel canto tradition is not close to me, and Bartoli and Larmore are brilliant practitioners of that side of things. I have sung a great deal of Mozart, and now I am ready for Strauss," she says. Her latest dream is to sing Carmen. Groop is an elegant singer who shuns over-interpretation. "These days, we want everything to be exaggerated. We over-interpret, turning Lieder into opera. Then, when you get to the opera stage, the clichés are so big you can't believe it," she said disparagingly in an interview for the Daily Telegraph in January 1998. Success brings pressure. Groop spends about 300 days a year travelling - and so she seems to be everywhere at once. In autumn 1998, her schedule included Mozart's La clemenza di Tito at the Bordeaux Opera, appearances with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Vienna Musikverein, and Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro with Zubin Mehta at the Bavarian State Opera. In spring 1999, Groop will be doing a recital tour of Europe and appearing in Mozart's La clemenza di Tito at the Glyndebourne Festival.
